The Bands

Play & learn

Concert Bands

Roseville Public School has 3 Concert Bands: Junior Band, Intermediate Band, and Senior Band. All bands are open to students in years 3-6 who wish to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Instruments available to play in our concert bands include:

Flute – Oboe – Clarinet – Bass Clarinet – Bassoon – Alto Saxophone – Tenor Saxophone – Baritone Saxophone – Trumpet – French Horn – Trombone – Baritone – Euphonium – Tuba – Bass Guitar – Mallets – Percussion (drum kit, timpani, auxiliary, mallets).

Entry into each band is based on musical skill level, not year at school (although we try to keep students with their peers as much as possible). All beginner students start in Junior Band and progress upward.

Junior Band

Junior Band is our entry level band for students who are new to music, who wish to learn a new instrument, or who enjoy band but are not yet ready to move up to Intermediate Band.

Intermediate Band

Intermediate Band is our middle concert band for students usually in their second year of learning, or who are still developing their music skills before moving up to Senior Band.

Senior Band

Senior Band is our top concert band for students typically in their third or fourth year of learning, who are capable of playing longer and more challenging music.

Extension Ensembles

We are lucky at RPS to have a number of extension ensembles for students who wish to experience a different variety of challenging music in a smaller ensemble setting. Wind Ensemble and Stage Band is usually reserved for Years 5/6 students; however, Year 4 students may be accepted at the Conductors discretion. Drum Corps is open to all band students. To be eligible for an extension ensemble, students must also participate in at least one concert band.*

*String Ensemble is open to all students from years 1 – 6. String Ensembles students do not have to participate in a Concert Band.

Wind Ensemble

Wind Ensemble is traditionally for students who play flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, and saxophone; although other instrumentation may be accepted at the Conductors discretion.

Stage Band

Stage Band is traditionally for students who play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, percussion, keyboard, and bass guitar; although other instrumentation may be accepted at the Conductors discretion.

Drum Corps

Drum Corps 1 and 2 is for students interested in marching percussion – snare, toms, bass drum, cymbals. Students do not need to be a percussionist to join but must be enrolled in a concert band to be eligible (e.g. A student may play the trumpet in Junior Band and be eligible to learn percussion in Drum Corps).

String Ensemble

String Ensemble is traditionally for students who play violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The String Ensemble is the only ensemble in which students do not have to also participate in a concert band. String Ensemble is also the only ensemble that will accept students from years 1 – 6.

All Extension Ensembles are dependent on student enrolment numbers and will only run if the minimum enrolment numbers are reached each year.

Rehearsals

All Concert Bands rehearse twice per week, whilst all Extension Ensembles rehearse once per week. Rehearsal time is precious, so all members are asked to arrive with plenty of time to set up (15 minutes prior to start), attend all rehearsals, assist with set up and pack up, and be responsible and respectful at all times.
