How To Join
Registration
Any Roseville PS student from Years 3-6 who has an interest in learning a musical instrument is welcome to join the Band Program. We accept registrations at any point during the year, although the most popular time to join is at the start of the year.
Students will be invited to join band in Term 4 of the previous year. All students in Year 2 (and any interested Year 3-6 students) may participate in our “Try An Instrument Day” to experience all the different instruments and see what they would be best suited to playing.

Choosing An Instrument
All Year 2 students (and any interested Year 3-6 students) will participate in our annual “Try An Instrument Day” at the start of Term 4. This is a fun class activity where each student is invited to try out a variety of instruments – some choose to try them all! A professional instrumental tutor will assess whether the instrument physically suits the child and whether they have the fine motor skills and coordination required for their preferred instrument. The results of the day will be sent home to parents with information on how to register for band.
Once a student has registered for band, they will be allocated an instrument based on the student’s top 3 choices, the results they receive from the instrument trials, the instruments we have available, and what is required to make a balanced band. Instrument allocation is done by the Band Director and Band Conductor.

Instrument Hire
Band members may hire school instruments from the Band Committee. Hire agreements are generally available under a 12-month contract, after which you should consider purchasing your own instrument. Instruments (particularly larger instruments such as Tuba) may be hired for a longer period, subject to availability.
Due to the limited number of instruments available for hire, instruments are allocated on a “first in” basis. Should we be unable to provide you with an instrument, there are other hire companies that will be able to assist you.
If you accept the hire of an instrument Terms and Conditions will apply, including:
– The instrument remains the property of the Band Program
– The students must be the sole user of the instrument
– The instrument is not insured by the Band or school while in your care; insurance is the hirer’s responsibility
– If the instrument is lost, stolen, or damaged (fair wear and tear excepted) the hirer must pay the FULL REPLACEMENT COST of the instrument
– The instrument has been serviced and provided to students in good working order at the time of hire. If necessary, instruments must be repaired by an authorised repairer, at the hirer’s cost
– The students must seek instruction from his/her private tutor on correct maintenance and care
– All equipment must be returned in good working order at the end of Term 4
– Instruments must be returned within one week of leaving the Band Program for any reason
Instrument Hire Fees
For all standard instruments (e.g. clarinet, trumpet, saxophone) you will be charged a hire fee in addition to an annual service fee. All instruments are cleaned and serviced once per year (usually during January). Percussionists will be charged a small fee to cover the maintenance costs of the school’s percussion equipment, which is used during rehearsals and performances. In 2020, Junior Band percussionists will also be charged a small fee for a take home glockenspiel to assist them with their practice (the Glockenspiel remains property of the band).
Band Fees
Roseville Public School Band is a non-profit organisation run by the Band Committee (a sub-committee of the P&C). Band fees are levied to cover the various costs of running the band program, including conductor’s fees, instrument repair and maintenance, new instrument purchases, new music and method books, competition and festival fees, band intensive days, and general administration costs.
Fees are essentially determined each year by calculating our costs and dividing by the number of band members. This means that our fees are non-refundable – we cannot offer refunds if a student decides to leave the Band part way through the year.
Every attempt is made to keep fees as low as possible to ensure that the band program remains accessible to all children.
Extension Ensembles (Stage Band, Wind Ensemble, Drum Corps) are charged in addition to your primary concert band fees.
Band invoices are issued each Semester (i.e. twice per year). Fees are expected to be paid within the invoice date (usually 14 days). Individual families can approach the Band Convenor or Band Treasurer (in confidence) to pay by instalments if necessary.
At RPS we want all our students to have the opportunity and freedom to learn an instrument and be part of the band. If you are suffering hardship or difficulty with band fees or private lessons, you should contact the School Principal, Band Convenor, or Band Treasurer (in complete confidence) as we will be able to help.
Note: Band Fees for 2021 will be sent to RPS families directly upon request. They will not be posted to this website.
